What is Blackspot in Cows?
Blackspot (also known as black pox) is a painful teat disorder that appears as deep ulcers containing granulation tissue and a visible black spot.
-
Almost always found on the teat tip and orifice of the teat sinus
-
Can impede milk flow and cause leakage
-
Typically linked to excessive suction during milking
-
Commonly associated with Staphylococcus aureus bacteria
-
Increases risk of mastitis if infection spreads into the udder
As blackspot lesions progress, they can grow up the teat canal, causing the orifice to open and leak milk — further exposing the cow to bacterial infections.
